How to convert min/km to km/h (and back)

The formula is simple: km/h = 60 ÷ pace in min/km, and pace in min/km = 60 ÷ speed in km/h. For example, 5:00/km gives 60 ÷ 5 = 12 km/h, and 10 km/h gives 60 ÷ 10 = 6:00/km. To turn a pace into a race time, multiply it by the distance: the table above does it for you over the four classic distances.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert min/km to km/h?

Divide 60 by your pace in minutes per kilometer. Example: 5:00/km = 60 ÷ 5 = 12 km/h. The other way round, to go from km/h to min/km, divide 60 by your speed: 10 km/h = 60 ÷ 10 = 6:00/km.

What pace is 10 km/h?

10 km/h is a pace of 6:00 min/km. At that speed, you run a 5K in 30:00, a 10K in 1:00:00, a half marathon in 2:06:35 and a marathon in 4:13:10.

What speed do I need for a 50-minute 10K?

A 50-minute 10K takes a pace of 5:00/km, or 12 km/h. To hold that pace on race day, you need to have trained it: threshold sessions and race-pace work.

What pace is 12 km/h?

12 km/h is 5:00 min/km. It's an intermediate runner's pace: 25:00 for 5K, 50:00 for 10K, 1:45:29 for the half marathon and 3:30:59 for the marathon.

How do I get from pace to race time?

Multiply your pace (in seconds per km) by the distance in km. The table above gives you your times for 5K, 10K, half marathon (21.1 km) and marathon (42.195 km) at each speed.
